Whaling Objects Highlight Object Number: 2019.14.1 As you would expect, food in South Georgia needs to be able to last. Whaling ships and the shore stations had to be able to store food which would not go bad quickly. This resulted in large quantities of tinned and dried preserved food being available at all the stations. These dried and preserved goods were supplemented by fresh meat where possible. Pigs and sheep were kept on the island for the purpose of food and whale meat was eaten after it had been hung properly. Chickens were also kept to provide fresh eggs and there were some potatoes on the island which were kept in stores.
